CHALMERS

Overview:

Chalmers is a university of technology in which research and teaching are conducted on a broad front within technology, natural science and architecture. Our inspiration lies in the joy of discovery and the desire to learn. Underlying everything we do is a wish to contribute to sustainable development both in Sweden and world-wide.
Our research work deals ultimately with improving people’s conditions, and we often cross traditional boundaries in order to solve the problems of the future. Chalmers has become strong within several areas of science, and some of our research leads its field internationally. We wish in particular to develop and strengthen our research in the fields of bioscience, information technology, environmental science and nanotechnology. Chalmers is a pioneer in Europe in the field of start-up companies, and has built up an efficient system of innovation in order to find applications in research into the formation of companies. Chalmers has great aspirations to develop continually by opening doors to the outside world and by thinking innovatively. We have a close and productive collaboration with business and society at large. In this way we reinforce our own development, at the same time as we contribute to the growth of society. Chalmers was founded in 1829 as a result of a donation from the director of the Swedish East India Company, William Chalmers. His motto, and ours, is:Avancez!

Academic Highlights:

Every year, in May or June, Chalmers holds a ceremony for the conferment of higher degrees when both PhDs and honorary doctorates are awarded. On this occasion the Chalmers Medal and the Research Supervisor of the Year are also awarded.
Chalmers also holds two graduation ceremonies each year, one in the spring and one in the autumn, when the graduates for MScEng, BScEng as well as International MScEng receive their degree certificates.

We have made room reservations at Scanic Europa, near the central station in Göteborg.
You will be able to book these in conjunction with your registration to the conference.

Fees:

The Minister of Education and Science has reported that beginning in 2010, the government intends to propose that students from countries outside the EU/EES will pay tuition fees to study at Swedish universities and colleges. The proposal will be introduced in a bill in September.
The same bill will propose the establishment of a scholarship programme through which international students who can not pay tuition fees may apply for aid.
Exactly how the proposal will be worded is not clear. Consequently, we must wait until the bill is presented in its entirety, which is expected to take place in September. It appears likely, however, that the fees will apply only to students who are accepted for new courses of study beginning in 2010. Courses for Swedish students and students from EES countries will continue to be tuition-free.
Thus, among the things we do not know are

  • Exactly which students will be included
  • What form the scholarship programme will take
  • How applications will be administered
  • How, when and to whom fees will be paid
  • How the processing of applications, scholarships and residence permits will be coordinated

There are therefore many questions about the changes but very few answers before the bill is presented in its entirety. Chalmers’ planning will get under way as soon as the bill’s contents are known. We will then have about 1 year for planning before we need to issue information about educational programmes beginning in autumn 2010.

ExtraCurricular Activities

During study periods, students spend most of their time at the university attending classes. The campus is close to the centre of Göteborg. In addition to excellent educational premises and a large library, the campus contains restaurants, cafeterias, a cinema, a book shop and a couple of clubs. Not far from the campus there is a student sports hall.
There are nearly 10,000 students living and studying at Chalmers. So it's almost a foregone conclusion that you'll find friends here who share your special interest, whatever it may be. The buzzing student union life at Chalmers has something for every taste: there are clubs and societies for choir singers, extreme sports, data freaks, balloonists – pretty much everything imaginable.
Arriving as a new student at Chalmers you obviously have a lot of questions. How does student aid work; is it really difficult to study at Chalmers; where are the best workplaces? Where can I find people who share my precise interests, and which societies have the best parties? Half the fun is finding out the answers yourself – but we can give you a sneak preview.
